What is a prolapse and why do they happen. A prolapse occurs when one or more of the organs in the pelvis shift from from their normal position and push on the walls of the vagina, or in the case of the uterus, bulge into into. There are four main types which involve the womb (uterus), bowel, bladder or top of the vagina. A prolapse can cause pain and discomfort but it is not life threatening.
