What is alopecia? Alopecia is the medical term for hair loss. There are many types of alopecia and they can be broadly classified into ‘scarring’ (where scar tissue forms and there is permanent loss of hair) or ‘non-scarring’ (where there is no scar tissue and the hair loss may be reversed).
