Psoriasis: Dermatologist Adam Freidmann explains the treatment options

Psoriasis is a skin condition that can have a big impact on people’s lives. In this video consultant dermatologist Dr Adam Freidmann explains the condition and we hear from people who have it as well. They talk about how psoriasis has affected their lives, how they have coped and come to terms with it, and how the treatments have helped.

Importantly they point out that psoriasis is not contagious.

It is a long-term, inflammatory condition causing patches of red, scaly skin known as plaques. It is caused by increased production of skin cells. The symptoms come and go throughout life, and their frequency and severity varies considerably from person to person.

Plaques are generally inflamed, itchy and red but often appear to be shiny and silvery due to the build up of scaly skin on the surface.

There are various forms and numerous triggers that can make the condition flare up such as stress, anxiety and diet.

It is a fairly common condition, affecting about 1 in every 50 people.  It often runs in families. There are various treatments to reduce the symptoms but there is no cure.
