Loved by Hollywood stars, the Cool Laser has finally arrived in the UK. Dr Vincent Wong explains just how many things this treatment can do.
Laser treatments can be great for so many things – acne, removing scars and stretch marks, not to mention skin rejuvenation, but there’s often a hefty price to pay in terms of pain and downtime with redness and peeling that can see you stuck indoors for days.
Enter the Cool Laser.
This nifty device that boasts a vast array of treatments works in a different way to many of the other lasers on the market as it only targets the water in the skin. Not wishing to bore you with science, it does this because it’s an Erbium laser. Erbium emits a wavelength of light that only affects the water, leaving the surrounding tissue undamaged. It’s delivered in a series of very fast pulses which feel a little like being flicked with a rubber band.
This means that it’s not heating the skin itself so it’s far less painful and there’s no need for air cooling of the skin as there is with some other types of lasers.
Is it effective?
But does that mean it’s less effective? According to its distributor, Jim Westward from Novus Medical UK, the answer is a definitive ‘no’ and its earned its stripes in one of the most competitive markets in the world – Los Angeles.
“The laser has been developed over 40 years in a collaboration between Karl Zeiss and Asclepion and is a mainstay treatment of Dr Jason Emer in Beverley Hills and other well known Doctors,” Westward says.
He explains that because it can fire a short duration pulse of light it heats the treatment area quickly. The laser can be adjusted to length and depth and as such can do everything from removing fine lines and wrinkles to wart or mole removal. And the added bonus is that its a quick treatment – usually around 20 minutes.
Dr Vincent Wong is the first practitioner in the UK to have the machine and is leading the training of other practitioners on the device. He says it’s safe when used by trained operators and is more versatile than other lasers on the market.

Downtime?
“These can be difficult to treat but with the Cool Laser, especially if you combine it with mesotherapy designed for pigmentation, you can get some really good results,” he says.
What is the Cool Laser used for?
Dr Wong says another advantage of the machine is that it can be used for so many skin treatments and conditions including:
- Skin Rejuvenation
- Wrinkle and fine line reduction on face, neck and chest
- Smokers lines
- Excess skin above and below the eyes (non-surgical blepharoplasty)
- Stretch-mark removal
- Pigmentation reduction
- Skin lifting/tightening
- Reducing pore size
- Reducing acne, acne scars, general scars or post-surgery scars
- Reducing dark circles around eyes
- Mole, wart and skin tag removal (*always make sure your moles have been checked by a doctor before removal – we recommend a biopsy be sent for histology to ensure the mole is not cancerous.)
- Non surgical lip plumping
- Cool Laser mesotherapy treatments
Dr Wong, no longer provides this treatment but says there are good reasons it’s a favourite in Hollywood and is pleased it’s finally here in the UK.
