Can skin booster treatments like Profhilo help dry, thin menopausal skin?
As we age – especially as we approach menopause our skin changes. It can become thinner – almost crepe-like, dry and even itchy. So what can help?
According to the doctors at skin clinic Thérapie, skin boosters – like Profhilo can make a significant difference.
Its main ingredient is Hyaluronic acid (HA), which is a known skin hydrant. When we think of hyaluronic acid we usually think of fillers, but Profhilo is different – it is injected under the skin where it ‘flows’ to provide moisture to dry and lacklustre skin, making it a very popular treatment for people around the menopause.
But it provides more than hydration
A spokesperson for Thérapie says “Profhilo is a unique skin remodelling treatment and works by stimulating the production of collagen and elastin which is lost and produced in lower amounts as we approach menopause. The slow release of HA aides in the production of collagen to achieve excellent results such as firmness, and the rebuilding of new, younger looking cells; this is unlike other anti-ageing injectables that use fillers to add volume.”
KEY FACT: Profhilo has been clinically proven to encourage the skin to regenerate itself.
What you need to know:
Q. Where can Profhilo be used – face and body?
Thérapie’s spokesperson says:
“The face is the main area in which you can have Profhilo, as this is the area in which we all wish to rejuvenate and treat to look more youthful. However, it can be used on the neck too; as we age we tend to forget about the neck area. So, by treating the neck area, you are adding hydration, helping reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and matching your youthful glow to your face.
“Now, Profhilo Body has been released, it is not just the shoulders up you can treat. Recently launched, Profhilo Body is the only injectable treatment specifically indicated for the treatment of body skin laxity (crepy skin). Comprising of the same high purity hyaluronic acid as the original Profhilo product, the Profhilo Body Kit also includes a Body Patch to soothe and moisturise the skin post-treatment, along with a Body Cream to firm, tone and hydrate the skin as part of your at-home skincare routine.
These help to optimise each treatment outcome with an aim to achieve impeccable transformational results on areas like the chest, abdomen, upper arms, and inner thigh.
Q. How long do the results last?
“The results can last up to roughly 6 months, however, this may vary by patient – particularly depending on their skin type and age. After this six-month period or when you begin to see the treatment’s effects wearing away, it is recommended that you can top up treatments if you wish to continue.”
Q. How does it work and why do you need more than one treatment?
“As our bodies age, we produce less collagen and elastin naturally – which help provide skin firmness, strength, and shape. So, when the number of these cells drop or weaken, your skin loses its smoothness and firm shape, creating fine lines and wrinkles.
“Profhilo treatments effectively stimulate the reproduction and replenishment of new collagen in the skin by slowly releasing hyaluronic acid – (a natural substance produced by your body which is critical for skin hydration and nutrition). Profhilo doesn’t mask the imperfections, but instead, gets to the core of them by actively renewing, stimulating and encouraging your body to produce collagen and elastin.
“During a Profhilo treatment, the area you are having treated is injected with 2ml of hyaluronic acid-based treatment in around five places. This is injected just below the skin layer where it quickly disperses and spreads throughout the skin, providing instant hydration. The treatment is typically administered over the two sessions, within a period of one month.”
Q. Is there anyone who can’t have it
“Profhilo is a very safe treatment to have, as it is not classed as a filler, the contra indications are minimal.
- However, you cannot have this treatment if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Are allergic to hyaluronic acid.”
Q. What are the side effects/downtime
“Hyaluronic Acid is relatively unproblematic and well tolerated by the human body because our bodies naturally produce hyaluronic acid.
“Mild swelling and bruising are among the only reported side effects associated with Profhilo treatment, which are both a natural consequence of injection. Even so, these symptoms often disappear within a few days and are no cause for alarm whatsoever. It is important to recall that any side effects suffered from this injection, if correctly applied, are from the fine needle used to insert the treatment, not the treatment itself.
“It is also highly unlikely that individuals will have an allergic reaction to the treatment since Profhilo is free from synthetic chemicals and is only based upon natural body acids. If, however, you find that you are suffering any of the following side effects, we strongly advise that you contact your medical professional.
- Worsening swelling (when your injection sites become gradually more swollen as time passes)
- If you suffer a severe, growing pain
- Red, pigmented, and hot skin
- Injection spots looking discoloured following the treatment after at least a day. Be wary of pale or grey discolouration.
- General sickness, such as nausea, dizziness, frequent pain.
